Nerve pain typically presents as a sharp and shooting type of pain. It can be prolonged or short lasting and can be very debilitating.
The nervous system is formed by two parts: the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord, which acts like the central computer in the body) and the peripheral nervous system (all the nerves in the body that allow the central nervous system to communicate with the body). These nerves flow through the spine and therefore a problem in the spine will lead to an interference of any of these nerves before reaching the body. This will lead to a loss of function to whatever that nerve is responsible for controlling and this can also produce pain.
On top of this, the nerves in the body can also get trapped in the body itself after leaving the spine. This typically occurs in the muscles, tendons and joints of the limbs of the body.
At Northwood Chiropractic we specialize in the spine and nervous system. We have a thorough and detailed process to identify and correct the root cause of nerve pain. Nerve pain essentially develops when there’s an interference to the nerve. The first step therefore is to identify which nerve is causing the problem and then where exactly the interference is taking place. We do this through our 5 step Gonstead spinal analysis, as well as a thorough neurological assessment to really understand how your nervous system is functioning. Once this has been properly defined, the cause of the problem can be corrected.
It is also important to note that pain is just a warning sign from the body that something is wrong. If you are getting this warning sign, it often not only suggests an underlying cause to this pain, but that there could be other underlying problems developing elsewhere in the spine and body too, contributing to a reduction in your overall health. Often once the pain presents, we know the problem has likely been developing for a long time to get to this point. This is why a thorough and precise analysis of your spine is critical to ensure you are functioning at your best and to ensure optimal health into the future.
