When people experience shoulder pain, they usually focus on the shoulder itself. It makes sense. That is where the pain is.
But what if the real problem is not just your shoulder? What if it is actually coming from your neck?
At Northwood Chiropractic Oxford, this is something we see regularly.
The Neck and Shoulder Are Closely Connected
Your neck, also known as the cervical spine, is home to the nerves that supply your shoulder, arm, and hand. These nerves exit the spine and form a network called the brachial plexus. This network controls:
- Shoulder movement
- Muscle strength
- Sensation in the arm and hand
- Coordination and stability

If the joints in your neck are not moving properly, this can affect how those nerves function. Even subtle mechanical stress can change how well signals travel from your brain to your shoulder.
On top of that, your neck and shoulder work together mechanically. When you lift your arm overhead, your shoulder blade and your neck both need to move well. If your neck is stiff or restricted, your shoulder has to compensate. Over time, that extra stress can lead to irritation and injury.
What About Rotator Cuff Tears or Frozen Shoulder?
Conditions like rotator cuff tears or frozen shoulder are very real. They show up on scans. They can be painful and limiting.
But here is the important question:
Why did it happen, and why is it not healing?
In some cases, nerve interference from the neck can:
- Alter muscle activation patterns
- Reduce stability around the shoulder joint
- Increase strain on the rotator cuff
- Slow down tissue healing
If the nerve supply to the shoulder is not functioning optimally, the muscles may not fire properly. This can lead to overload in certain areas, weakness in others, and eventually damage.
We also see people who have had shoulder pain for months or even years. They may have had injections, exercises, or physiotherapy. It improves slightly, then returns.
When we assess them, we often find significant restriction or dysfunction in the neck that has never been addressed.
The shoulder might be injured, but the reason it is not recovering could be higher up the chain.
The Body Works as a Chain
Your body does not work in isolated parts. It works as a chain.
The neck connects to the shoulder.
The shoulder connects to the elbow.
The elbow connects to the wrist and hand.
If one link in that chain is not functioning well, the others compensate.
That is why at Northwood Chiropractic Oxford we do not just look at the shoulder. We assess:
- The cervical spine
- The shoulder joint
- The shoulder blade mechanics
- The elbow and wrist
- Muscle balance and movement patterns
- Neurological function
We are asking a different question:
What is the root cause of this shoulder not recovering?
Sometimes the shoulder is the main issue.
Sometimes the neck is driving the problem.
Often, it is a combination of both.
Why This Matters
If you only treat the painful area without addressing the underlying cause, the problem can keep returning.
It is like mopping the floor while the tap is still running.
By restoring proper movement in the neck and improving nerve function, we can often:
- Improve shoulder stability
- Reduce strain on injured tissues
- Support better healing
- Help prevent recurrence
Could Your Neck Be Involved?
If you have:
- Shoulder pain that will not go away
- Pain that travels down the arm
- Numbness or tingling
- Weakness in the arm
- Shoulder treatment that only gives short term relief
It may be time to look beyond the shoulder.
Your shoulder pain could be coming from your neck.
If you are struggling with ongoing shoulder issues, we would be happy to assess the whole picture and help you understand what is really going on.
